The 15th International Congress of Quantum Chemistry held in Tsinghua University
The 15th International Congress of Quantum Chemistry (ICQC) has taken place in Beijing from June 8 to 13, in the Amphitheatre Hall of New Tsinghua Xuetang. ICQC is under the auspice of the International Academy of Quantum Molecular Science (IAQMS), The 15th ICQC is the first time for this important series of conference organized in China, attracting more than 1000 participants from 41 countries/areas, including two Nobel Laureates and 50 IAQMS members. It reached the pinnacle of this conference series. The conference chairman is Prof. Zhigang Shuai from the Department of Chemistry, Tsinghua University, and co-chaired with Prof. Weihai Fang of Beijing Normal University, Prof. Wenjian Liu of Peking University, and Prof. Weitao Yang of Duke University in US.
The 15th ICCQ opened in the afternoon on June 8 with a warm welcome address by Prof. Shengyao Jiang, vice-President of Tsinghua University. Then, Professor Josef Michl, the President of IAQMS delivered an opening address followed by a ceremony to present the IAQMS annual medals for the years of 2012-2014. Finally, Professor Zhigang Shuai, the congress chairman, introduced the contributions of chemistry to the ancient China civilization as well as the prominent achievements in chemistry in modern China and some earlier work in quantum chemistry by Chinese scientists. These aroused general interests among the international participants.
After the opening ceremony, Prof. Rudolph Marcus (Nobel Laureate) presented the opening lecture. The year 2015 happens to be the 100th anniversary for the late Prof. Ao-Qing Tang, founding father of quantum chemistry in China. To commemorate Prof. Tang and his contributions to modern theoretical chemistry in China, ICQC-2015 organized a session for this purpose. In his lecture, Prof. Roald Hoffmann (Nobel Laureate) has elucidated the scientific contributions of Ao-qing Tang and has recalled their close friendship.
According to the tradition, ICQC only features plenary lectures and poster presentations. So, the selection of lectures becomes very strict. Only those representing ground breaking progresses in the field can show up on stage. This time, the 39 lectures represent the major advances in theoretical chemistry in the world, covering all the sub-disciplinary. The four poster sessions exhibited more than 600 presentations, attracting many scholars from eminent scientists to graduate students. After a few rounds of competition, 66 best poster awards have been selected by a poster judge committee consisting of 20 leading scientists in the field from all over the world.
This ICQC not only organized the main Congress in Tsinghua University, but also organized nine satellite meetings with five before and four after the main Congress, including ‘Recent advances in electronic structure theory’ in Nanjing, ‘Theoretical challenges in small molecule dynamics’ in Dalian, ‘The frontiers of computational catalysis’ in Beijing, ‘Recent advances in quantum dynamics and thermodynamics of complex systems’ in Beijing, ‘Modeling and simulation of biological and macromolecular systems’ in Changchun, ‘The chemical bonds at the 21st century’, ‘Advances in modeling of nanomaterials’ in Hefei, ‘New frontiers of relativistic quantum chemistry’ in Beijing, and ‘Novel computational methods for quantitative electronic structure calculations’ in Kobe, Japan.
This ICQC not only provided a platform to disseminate the best research in theoretical chemistry research, but also to encouraging the younger generation to reach the frontiers and to establish collaboration relationship. The participants are deeply impressed by the considerate conference organization and the premium facilities in the New Tsinghua Xuetang amphitheatre.
The IAQMS was founded by Raymond Daudel (France), Per-Olov Löwdin (Sweden), John A. Pople (UK and USA), Robert G. Parr (USA), and Bernard Pullman (France) in 1967, under the inspiration and with the support by quantum physicist Louis de Broglie. The first ICQC took place in Menton, France, organized by Raymond Daudel. It is held every three year since and it becomes the top conference for theoretical chemistry worldwide.

.... I would like to take this opportunity to thank you for including me in the program of ICQC. I especially would like to thank you for arranging a session to celebrate the emense contributions and influence of Tang Ou-Qing on science and education in quantum chemistry in China. It was greatly appreciated by all people whom I have had conversations during the meeting. Many had fond impressions by the presentation of Roald Hoffmann and his personal reflection and moving presentation. (it turned out that the preparer of his talk had access to the photos that I have used in my talk….) The meeting was extremely sccessful, evidenced by the ICQC blue for the entire week!
QC certainly has a blue sky in the future development in China.
Congratulations on your success of the meeting, and on your effort to bring ICQC to China.

The ICQC meeting was terrific! I really appreciate all the effort you put into this. I think it was over a decade ago that you first approached the IAQMS about doing this, and in the end you have delivered on all that you promised. Sorry that there were the problems that you described. This must have been frustrating, but in the end it sounds like you found a solution.
I’m glad that the weather was good. In Chicago we’ve had rain and cold weather so we would have been in trouble to do the conference at the same time.
Looking forward to seeing you at future meetings.
Regards, George (George Schatz)
